Couple assembling a rocking chair on a rug in a bright living room with the box nearby

How to Assemble a Rocking Chair in About 20 Minutes

Back to blog

The box is in the hallway and you can't wait to sit down. The good news is that putting a rocking chair together is one of the easier furniture jobs you'll ever do.

This guide walks you through how to assemble a rocking chair from start to finish. We'll cover what to do before you open the box, the usual order of steps, the small mistakes that cause wobbles, and how to keep the chair rocking smoothly for years. Every chair is a little different, so keep the instruction sheet from your box close by and use this guide alongside it.

Before You Start

A few minutes of prep makes the whole job easier. Do these things before you open the box.

  • Pick the room. Assemble the chair where it will live, or close to it. A finished rocker is bulkier to carry through doorways than the parts are.
  • Clear the floor. You'll want an open area a bit bigger than the chair itself.
  • Protect the floor. Lay down the flattened box, a blanket or a rug so wood and fabric don't get scratched.
  • Find a helper. You can do it alone, but a second pair of hands makes lifting the seat and back much easier.
  • Grab a small bowl. Screws and washers roll. A bowl keeps them in one place.

Unbox and Check the Parts

Open the box carefully. Avoid using a sharp blade deep in the box, since it can nick the upholstery. Lift the larger pieces out first and set them on your blanket.

Then find the instruction sheet and the hardware bag. Lay every part out and compare it with the parts list. Group the screws by size. It takes a couple of minutes, and it saves a lot of confusion later.

How to Assemble a Rocking Chair Step by Step

The exact steps depend on the model, so always follow the instruction sheet for your chair. Most upholstered rockers come together in a similar order, though.

Step 1: Attach the base or rockers

Start with the part that touches the floor. On many chairs this is a pair of curved runners or a rocking base. Line up the holes and insert the screws by hand first, just a few turns each. Don't tighten them all the way yet.

Step 2: Connect the seat

With a helper holding the seat steady, set it onto the base and line up the holes. Again, start every screw by hand before you use a tool. This keeps the threads straight and prevents stripping.

Step 3: Add the backrest

Many backrests slide or clip into brackets on the seat. Push firmly until it seats fully, then add any screws the instructions show. If your chair reclines, check that the back moves smoothly before you continue.

Step 4: Fit the arms

Attach the arms to the seat and back. They often help hold the whole frame square, so line them up carefully.

Step 5: Tighten everything evenly

Now go back around the chair and tighten each screw a little at a time, working in a criss-cross pattern like you would with a car wheel. Stop when each one feels snug. Overtightening can crack wood or strip threads.

Step 6: Add cushions, footrest and headrest

Finally, add loose cushions, a lumbar pillow, a headrest or a separate footrest if your chair has them. Fluff the cushions so they sit evenly.

Test the Rock

Stand the chair up on its final spot and give it a gentle push. It should rock smoothly and quietly, without leaning to one side.

  • If it wobbles, loosen the base screws slightly, press the chair down on a flat floor, and tighten them again evenly.
  • If it squeaks, check that every screw is snug. A loose joint is the most common cause of a creak.
  • If it leans, make sure the backrest is fully seated in its brackets.

Then sit down slowly for the first time, and enjoy it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Most assembly problems come from a few simple slips.

  1. Tightening too early. Fully tightening the first screws can pull the frame out of line. Leave them loose until everything is in place.
  2. Mixing up screws. Longer screws in the wrong holes can poke through or fail to hold. Sort them by size first.
  3. Using a power drill on full speed. It's easy to strip a thread or crack wood. The tools in the box are all you need.
  4. Skipping the parts check. Finding a missing piece halfway through is frustrating. Count everything at the start.
  5. Building on a slope. An uneven floor can hide a wobble until later. Assemble on a flat surface.

Care After Setup

A little attention keeps your chair rocking smoothly.

  • Check the screws after the first couple of weeks and again every few months. Wood can settle slightly.
  • Place the chair on a rug or add felt pads if you want to protect hard floors.
  • Leave a little room behind the chair so it can rock and recline freely.
  • Vacuum the upholstery regularly. If your chair has zip-off covers, like the Sunday, follow the care label when you wash them.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to assemble a rocking chair?

Setup is simple. A helper makes it easier to lift and hold the larger pieces, especially on bigger recliner rockers.

Do I need my own tools?

No. The tools you need are included in the box. A small bowl for screws and a blanket to protect the floor are the only extras worth having.

Why is my rocking chair squeaking after assembly?

A loose screw is the most common cause. Check each joint and tighten it evenly. If the noise continues, reach out to our support team.

Once it's built, the only thing left to do is sit down and rock. If you're still choosing, our reading rockers and the Rowan, a cocoon rocker with a built-in footrest, are easy to set up and easy to love. Every chair ships free to the contiguous US.
