A chair you use every day picks up crumbs, spills, pet hair and the odd coffee drip. The good news is that most of it comes out easily if you know what to do. This guide covers how to clean upholstered chair fabric safely, from reading the care label to handling fresh spills and doing a gentle deep clean. We also cover the frame and the rocking base, because a well-kept chair feels better to sit in.
Start With the Care Code
Most upholstered furniture carries a small tag with a cleaning code. It tells you which cleaners are safe for the fabric. Check it before you use anything beyond a dry cloth.

- W: water-based cleaners are safe. Mild soap and water work well.
- S: use a solvent-based or dry cleaning product only. Water can leave rings.
- W/S: either water-based or solvent-based cleaners are fine.
- X: vacuum or brush only. Leave anything more to a professional.
If you cannot find a tag, check the product page or ask the maker. At Mokyka, our support team can tell you how to care for your chair at support@mokyka.com.
Weekly Care in Five Minutes
A little regular care prevents most of the dirt that makes deep cleaning hard.
Vacuum with a soft brush
Use the upholstery attachment and go over the seat, back, arms and crevices. Dust and grit act like sandpaper on fabric over time, so this one habit makes a big difference.

Fluff and rotate
Plump the seat and back cushions, and flip or rotate any loose ones. This spreads the wear and keeps the chair from forming a permanent dip where you sit most.
Deal with pet hair
A lint roller or a slightly damp rubber glove lifts hair from teddy, corduroy and chenille quickly. Run your hand over the fabric in one direction and the hair rolls into a clump.
How to Clean Upholstered Chair Spills Fast
Speed matters more than any product. The sooner you act, the less the spill soaks in.

- Blot gently. Press a clean white cloth or paper towel onto the spill to soak up as much as possible. Rubbing pushes it deeper and can rough up the fabric.
- Work from the outside in. This keeps the stain from spreading into a bigger ring.
- Test your cleaner first. Try it on a hidden spot, such as the back or underside, and wait for it to dry.
- Go easy on the cleaner. For W-coded fabric, a few drops of mild dish soap in a cup of lukewarm water is plenty. Dampen a cloth, blot, then blot again with plain water.
- Dry it well. Press with a dry towel, then let it air dry. A fan helps. Avoid a hair dryer, which can set stains or shrink fibers.
A Gentle Deep Clean, Once or Twice a Year
Every few months, or before the holidays, give the chair a fuller refresh.
Freshen with baking soda
Sprinkle a light layer of baking soda over the seat and back, leave it for about 20 minutes and vacuum it up. It helps lift everyday odors without any water.
Wash removable covers
Chairs with zip-off covers make this easy. The Sunday has washable chenille covers, and the Bramble has removable covers too. Follow the care label, close all zips before washing, use a gentle cycle in cold water and air dry. Put covers back on while slightly damp so they stretch into shape.

Spot clean fixed upholstery
For fabric that does not come off, work in small sections with a barely damp cloth and the right cleaner for your care code. Let each section dry before moving on. For larger stains or X-coded fabric, a professional upholstery cleaner is the safest choice.
Care Tips by Fabric
Each texture has its own small quirks. Our chair fabric guide covers them in more detail.

- Boucle: vacuum gently with a brush attachment. If a loop pulls, snip it flush with small scissors.
- Chenille: brush pressure marks in the direction of the pile with a soft clothes brush.
- Corduroy: brush along the ribs, never across, to lift the pile and remove hair.
- Teddy: fluff flattened areas with a soft pet brush and let it air out.
- Faux leather: wipe with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, then dry. Keep it out of strong direct sun.
Care for the Frame and Rocking Base
Upholstery gets the attention, and the frame deserves a little too.
Tighten the bolts
Rocking motion can loosen screws over time. Every few months, check and tighten the bolts with the tools that came with your chair. A steady chair rocks more quietly and feels more secure.

Clean wood and metal
Dust wood frames with a soft, dry cloth. Wipe metal bases with a damp cloth and dry them right away. Skip harsh sprays, which can dull a finish.
Protect the floor
Felt pads on the runners protect hardwood and reduce noise. Replace them when they wear thin.
For outdoor chairs, choose covers made for the job. The Cabana has a washable quilted cover for easy care on the porch.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a steam cleaner on my chair?
Only if the care code allows water-based cleaning and the maker approves steam. Test a hidden spot first and avoid soaking the cushion.
How do I get rid of odors in a fabric chair?
Sprinkle baking soda, wait about 20 minutes and vacuum. Airing the room and washing removable covers also helps.
How often should I clean an upholstered chair?
Vacuum weekly, handle spills right away and do a gentle deep clean once or twice a year.
A little care goes a long way. Keep a soft brush and a clean cloth nearby and your chair will stay a place you love to sink into for years to come. Looking for easy-care fabrics? Explore our recliner rockers, including options with washable covers.
