How to choose an outdoor rocking chair

Measure the porch, not only the chair

A porch rocker needs room to tip back without hitting the wall or the railing. The Veranda is 19.9 inches wide and The Charleston 20.9 inches, so both fit narrow porches. Each Beacon rocker measures 25.6 by 35 inches. Loungers take more length: The Riviera is 53.1 inches long and The Sway reaches 65.7 inches with its footrest out. For two people side by side, The Tandem rocking loveseat is 63 inches wide.

Check seat height too. The Beacon's seat is listed at 14.2 to 16.9 inches, The Sway's at 15.7 inches and The Lagoon's at 20 inches. A higher seat is easier to get out of, and a lower one feels more relaxed.

Materials and weather

Our porch and patio rockers use a few main materials:

  • HDPE: The Beacon set of 2 and The Homestead set
  • Rattan and wicker: The Veranda, The Seabrook, The Tandem, The Oasis, The Riviera, The Lagoon, The Cabana
  • Metal: The Charleston, a vintage-style garden rocker
  • Textilene: The Lido sun loungers

The Veranda and The Tidewater are listed as weatherproof, and The Beacon as all-weather. Natural materials last longer under a roof, so The Sway (bamboo) and The Weaver (hand-woven rattan) suit a sunroom best. The Sway also works on a covered porch.

Comfort outside

Want your feet up? The Tidewater comes with an ottoman, The Lagoon papasan has one too, and The Sway has a built-in footrest. The Lagoon has a listed weight capacity of 400 lb (220 lb for the ottoman) and The Sway 441 lb. For a deep bowl seat, The Seabrook papasan is 41.3 inches wide with a 32.3 inch seat. The Cabana works inside and out, and its cushion has a washable cover.

Sets and pairs

Front porches often call for two chairs. The Homestead pairs two HDPE rockers with a side table, with a listed capacity of 350 lb per rocker. The Beacon is a set of 2 all-weather rockers with a listed capacity of 265 lb. By the pool, The Lido gives you two rocking sun loungers and a side table. Colors vary by model: The Beacon comes in dark gray or white, The Charleston in vintage white or vintage green, and The Seabrook in charcoal, terracotta, navy or ivory.

Common questions

What is the best material for an outdoor rocking chair?

For an open porch or patio, look for chairs listed as weatherproof or all-weather, like The Veranda, The Tidewater and The Beacon. Natural materials such as bamboo and hand-woven rattan are better kept under a roof or in a sunroom.

Which porch rockers come as a set?

The Beacon is a set of 2 rockers, The Homestead includes 2 rockers and a side table, and The Lido includes 2 rocking sun loungers and a side table. The Tandem seats two on one rocking loveseat.

What weight capacity do your outdoor rockers have?

Listed capacities are 441 lb for The Sway, 400 lb for The Lagoon (220 lb for its ottoman), 350 lb per rocker for The Homestead and 265 lb for The Beacon. For other models, email support@mokyka.com.

Can I use these chairs indoors too?

Yes. The Cabana and The Lagoon are made for indoor and outdoor use, and The Weaver and The Sway suit a sunroom.

Should I cover my outdoor rocker in bad weather?

Covering or storing chairs during long stretches of rain, snow or strong sun helps them last longer. This matters most for woven and natural materials.
